The monolith gameplay isn't integrated into the story, but they're pretty integral to the story and Maou is part of them. Chapter 2 even confirmed Stellaroids are produced from wishes to harm others.

I think they're a pretty obvious metaphor for soul-destroying labor if the company theming of the game didn't tip you off.
