Yeah the twitter posts are 2014 while he apparently left at 2016. But I imagine even back then he realized his ideas were dead in the water. Almost a decade after he left and we still don't have a Half-Life 3..

Borealis is one of the major plot points that is directly referenced in Half-Life 2: Episode 2 as a major deal and is even referenced as an Easter egg in Portal 2. They pretty much have to do something about this hanging plot thread in a potential Half-Life 3 because the Borealis is one of the few things people know about where the story seems to be heading.

Even if it's just Gordon getting transported there for a couple of minutes something regarding the Borealis is what everyone is expecting.
