Spic here. My country's phone companies typically do not offer free SMS plans, while Telegram and WhatsApp are 'free' as long as you have Wi-Fi. No one likes to spend money on sending SMS much less on regular calls, and there's literally no point in doing that from our perspective. Also people like to text and send images, memes, etc, also being part of gay little groups, maybe having friends/family in other countries, and since everyone is glued to their phones and everybody uses whatsapp (at least here) it's the most sensible choice
