BBC reports that the Russian offensive near Kupiansk is led by Lt. Gen. Serhiy Storozhenko, a former Ukrainian officer who defected after the 2014 annexation of Crimea. Once commander of Ukraine’s 36th Coastal Defense Brigade, he allegedly urged others to surrender and join Russia. Just a week after the fake “referendum,” he received a Russian passport and rose swiftly through the ranks. He now commands forces fighting near Kupiansk.
