Episode One in particular is a really bad example of this. You spend an hour or two hours pointing the flashlight at enemies so Valve can show off the engine's lighting capabilities. Those levels were great on an aesthetic level, but they got old quickly.

If you can forgive the length of the driving levels, the main campaign was actually really good. I still think Episode Two is the best one of the three because the story segments didn't break the pacing, and the features they showcased in the main campaign were used to create some really compelling gameplay.
