Some do/did that, Yholl for Zdoom's final version, Term aimed at least some of his for the version before they broke hud scaling stuff, the Temple of the Lizard Men dev even got harassed by Graf for sticking to an old version and not updating to GzDoom 3.0, a move that was actually safer for the users.
