The titanic came back into pop culture when the wreck was discovered in 1985. It was a huge story and there was even a live TV special in 1987 hosted by Telly Savales where they took artifacts from the wreck and displayed them. Before that the titanic had just disappeared into the void like MH370. The reason they made the movie was because everybody knew about the titanic again because the wreck was found.
