They still care for each other and are as much partners as they where in 06 and still mean something to each other.

I can only really accept their team/ ship if the baseline of their relationship is "after 06", the reason why they work well together is because ~for some reason~ they were great partners in 06, and I pretend that they never developed their relationship after 06. Then I just have to pretend these heartfelt moments are because of 06, I guess?

I think its normal in a mascot franchise for character relationships to represent an "idea", and I think it's fine for characters to have always known each other, but the baseline of their relationship was established in Colors DS as them reuniting after 06 which is inherently contradictory to how close they are. We saw everything that happened in 06, it wasn't much. Yet you have moments like this panel "I'll always be there to help" like shit man what's the baseline here?
