>The upcoming film adaptation of Wuthering Heights has unwittingly sparked a race row online - as Emerald Fennell's take on the classic novel is accused of 'whitewashing' and casting people of colour as disagreeable characters.
>Starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi as Cathy and Heathcliff, the film has long since been mired in controversy, despite not having yet been released.
>The trailer, which came out on Thursday, catalysed a flurry of outrage about almost every aspect of the film so far - from explicitly kinky imagery to the soundtrack by electro-popstar Charli XCX.
>But it is Elordi's casting as the older Heathcliff that has caused the greatest stir, as Brontë's original description suggested dark hair, dark eyes and possibly Roma or Gypsy heritage.
>Many watchers have taken issue with the apparent casting of people of colour as weak-willed or seemingly cruel characters - most notably British-Pakistani Shazad Latif as Edgar Linton, Heathcliff's main opposer.
>One wrote: 'Doing all this over the movie where the main character is whitewashed and the snobby white people who put him down are played by actors of color?'
On the other hand, this is proof that white women do not care about DEI unless it affects their media.
