Part of it is because we're diametrically opposed to the European south and the Near East. For Germanics looking to define their identity in relation to Meds and Orientals it becomes logical to idealise Nordics as the true, undiluted Europeans.
Also it's useful when constructing a mythos to place its idealised characters and places outside your immediate geographical and timely position. If you claim the ideal exists in immediate vicinity it becomes easy critique and denigrate, and people lose faith in it.
