You can still copy kubo if you want, lord knows I copied vasto lorde panels when I was 15, but I'd reccomend doing your fundamentals and copying a reference from real life in addition to that. I know its not fun but you will learn how things are supposed to look and you will learn how to simplify them in a style like kubo.

You're never going to be 100% accurate but it never hurts to go back to basics. No matter what level you're at. Just remember to flip the canvas every now and then.
