bigscreen beyond 2e finally got here. Seems fine so far. Played through the first couple levels of HL Alyx to try it out, and finally listen to the dev commentary. Impressions:
- I'm already pretty stockholmed into liking the bigshit 1, so I have the audio strap and face gasket all dialed in, and the 2e slots in with no issues. No weird new driver installs or anything. Had to re-pair my index controllers but didn't have to reset playspace or anything.
- The IPD adjustment is a good change overall. You can adjust each eye individually while wearing the headset (they should've given you 2 tools though). The indicated IPD from the tick marks on the headset doesn't match up with my eye-doctor-provided IPD though (~58mm on device vs 63.5mm prescription), but it's nice to be able to adjust.
- Screens seem fine. made it past the QC lottery and no dead pixels. Color calibration seems slightly different than 1 but still acceptable; I haven't tried switching back to check. Brightness is acceptable to me, but I don't have a zuccset nor do I want to dig my index back out of the box to cross-check.
- FOV feels pretty much the same. Edge clarity is probably better but not obviously. my gasket is thin enough I can see the edges of the screen when it's tightened (eyelashes do deposit oil on the lenses too unfortunately, but I have screen wipes). I tried out https://boll.itch.io/wimfov and got https://andreasaronsson.com/!apps/wimfov/?id=2e2c617f fwiw, so like ~100deg diag. which feels believable.
- If I shake my head around I do see the persistence smear (on default brightness). I haven't tried out actual fast-paced games to see if it bothers me practically though. I don't remember if it's better or worse than bigshit 1.
- Alyx worked fine. Very nice being able to read the text on newspapers and stuff. 5yo game looks good.
- Didn't try out eye tracking yet. Have to get a code from their support for the beta, or do something with babble that I haven't looked up yet.
