There's also the story of how video games nearly died, and when Nintendo came into the scene they needed to laser target a demographic and they chose male children to market hard towards. Before then it was a very unisex and ageless activity. But gaming became male territory due to marketing.
This is quickly changing as more and more women grow up gaming because their 80s and 90s gaming parents will raise children of either gender to be gamers...
