I can agree with the getting in the way aspect, I was working with my father once and I had my 1qt on my belt, he put his coffee (that was in a paper cup mind you) on a log and I managed to knock it over with my canteen when I passed by it. This was at 5 AM and the sun had not even risen, so he was reasonably disgruntled.

I have an old 90s era ALICE sack that I put shit in and walk with sometimes, and I haven't personally had any problems with having either my 2qt or 1qt canteen on my belt
