>insanely expensive magic
Runetodt (guardians of the rift) crashed the prices pretty effectively and magic was reworked to work on more early/mid game stuff via element weaknesses. Air water and earth spells hit just as hard as up to fire now (e.g. air strike inherits fire strike's max hit if you have the magic for fire strike).
It's still not that great for expenses, but it's not prohibitive as it was before. It can also nuke enemies pretty hard now if they have a weakness; Zulrah melts with fire spells. You can nuke barrows with air spells. Crumble undead is a niche tool at best now though since air spells will usually outdo it which sucks for consistency.
It's been like this for a while now.
