It is real. The context is that you first fight two of these things, and once you kill the other the fight ends, and at a later part of the game you fight the surviving one who is mad as hell because you killed it's partner.

I don't know why some people are so upset over Hornet's comment though. It's not like anywhere in Silksong or Hollow Knight for that matter it was implied that Hornet was some sort of virginal character. She is an ancient demigod even in Hollowknight, as she was around when Hallownest was still thriving after Radiance was (temporarily) sealed within the Hollow Knight. It makes sense that she, as a princess of Hallownest, would have had partners over her long life.
