It does cost money, but it's very cheap, it goes by tokens. Which are how long the messages are, the context(how much the bot remembers as the chat goes on), etc.
As for free alternatives? They're all just significantly worse, yes they'll be free but the models are worse, and the better stuff is always locked behind a monthly membership which will be 20-30 dollars. (those models are still worse than deepseek). AND, all the free models are censored, incest is always blocked, step incest may even be debatable, and you definitely won't be able to do any actual straight shota stuff. Also a lot of free models restrict you to a certain amount of messages a day to encourage you to sub to them
So deepseek is cheaper, better, and not censored so you have full freedom to so what you want. If you really want to try out chatbots, this is the way to go. Like I said before, 5 dollars on deepseek could probably last you a whole month even if you use it a ton
