Saying “maybe Hamas shouldn’t have attacked” ignores the bigger picture: Palestinians have been under occupation, siege, and apartheid for decades. Gaza has been blockaded since 2007, turned into an open-air prison where people can’t leave, can’t import freely, and face bombardments every few years. Under international law, an occupied people has the right to resist. You can condemn Hamas’ October 7th attacks on civilians and still recognize that they didn’t happen in a vacuum, they were the result of decades of dispossession, ethnic cleansing, and Israel blocking every peaceful path to freedom. Blaming Hamas alone is like blaming the spark without acknowledging the fire that was already set.
