I don't think things are that bad. On the plus side, the events are still pretty easy and (excluding the current one) the story's actually getting somewhere. And L2D skins have interactions that they didn't use to.

On the downside, the new campaign stages and the harder parts of Operation Siren are difficult without new ships and new gear. The best gear is either UR gear from Research or crafted from Operation Siren resources, and both take ages.

We now have a Princess Maker and a few 3d dorms, which some of us find very skippable.
