When abstract preys were mentioned it felt much more tolerable and less edgy than the Gen 7 onward shit with named pokemon prey.
Especially since regular, inferior animals were implied to exist back in early pokemon.
Having regular animals exist as food source for superior creatures like humans and pokemon would make for a much less edgy pokemon world.
