It is not so much as they 'trust' them, more that their desires rule over them, and those desires make the decisions for them. They think they can rule over a powerful spirit, be her center of attention, when they can't rule over a single person. You are right to question the trustworthiness of a spirit, especially when the lure is sexual temptation. One must ask why they are not physically incarnated in this world? How can they experience earthly pleasure if they sequester themselves in their own realms? Yet these concerns are waived as warm feeling washes over the magician. For better or worse, their sexual appetite gets the better of them.
>plus communication is already
One of the key factors in identifying a tulpa compared to an external spirit is response time. If a person can suddenly speak for their 'succubus', it's most likely a tulpa. Given how adverse spiritual possession is, I do not think anyone is carrying an external spirit that can answer upon the whim of their thoughts. Certainly, a powerful spirit isn't going to subject itself to sharing a fleshy form with a random human, and messages are rarely readable like text messages being sent to your mind. They might not even speak English, for one.
>It seems way worse with spirits
Indeed, building on the first point, you would expect these spirits, if they were devoted to boundless love, that they would easily find a place in the current religious hierarchy. Sacrificing a human lifetime to be with your 'true love' and whisk them away to their realm once their count of days is completed. But this is not the case; these spirits are remote, distant, cryptic, and mysterious for a reason. They have no interest in sacrificing their own position of power and are quite content letting you waste away on earth. Only for them come to collect a soul when you keel over after idolizing them for who knows how long.
