Not for the first few steps of the recipe, as timing is important. You need to be careful when you brown onions (you should do it after putting like 2 tablespoons of oil and while the pan is cold/room temperature) otherwise you might overcook them. You also need to stir it every 30 seconds or so, otherwise the top layer of onions will not be cooked and the bottom layer will be overcooked. You do this for 7ish minutes.
You want your onions to be light brown to brown, the stuff you see at the bottom is the burnt sugar.
I forgot to mention you want to do this in a big-ish pot if possible, otherwise just use half of the ingredients in the recipe.
