Working as a SWE at a defense company, the commute to and from the office is ~4 hrs via bus + train + car everyday, doing it because i live at home for free, making $120k, work in a sealed windowless room with one computer that has internet and redditors playing bad bunny on speakers through it.

I am able to complete all tasks that are given to me. I leave around 4 so that I can get home by 6, usually am there ~7hrs but put more on timecard to get 40hrs.

Recently my manager had a 1-on-1 "FYI" convo talking about hours and how they have to be time in the building, felt like a passive aggessive threat for firing me.

Guy on my team just got fired a week after for, i suspect, a similar reason.

Am I a piece of shit for minimizing time wasted in a hole? How bad is it to get fired? What is the best course of action?
