I didn't get to Skyrim until like 2019, and to this date I still haven't finished the main quest for one reason or another. Either some game-breaking bug corrupts my save, I go so long without playing it I just start over, or I find some mod that I absolutely need that requires a new save file, etc. Todd's magnum opus truly is the gift that keeps on giving.

There's several mods that free you from being railroaded into the being the titular dragonborn (imagine that Todd, getting to ROLE PLAY in your rpg) but yeah, it's kind of dopey. Now that said, it's not like Morrowind or Oblivion was much better in that regard. You were always the chosen one, as foretold in the Elder Scrolls, in 3 and 4 as well.
