If you think about it, Panty is a very traditionally masculine character - not just in her writing & role but also her visual acting. Genderbend her and she'd be a "manga Lupin"-type playboy character. One aspect the old dubbers missed is just how hot-blooded she can be - it's not a stretch to picture her as a Getter pilot. Kimiko Ueno aside she's fundamentally a character created by men, yet tons of women love her; which proves my point about humanism.

Don't like the "this show exists to do X" idea either. FLCL technically was "about" trying out digital animation, sure, but it was also a show full of meaning.
