It seems VIZ added the bit about him being alive in the tenth century. The original line seems to be "Yeah, he was a real person".

Well, I actually checked that line and got similarly confused as VIZ did, I guess. I see the implication now. And it was sort of conveyed by the previous panel. The line was その灰丸が逃げるでなく、連れ出されたというのか･･･? (Sono hai maru ga nigerudenaku, tsuredasa reta to iu no ka?) which VIZ interpretted incorrectly as "So, that Haimaru didn't run away, but was taken away?" rather than "So, that Haimaru didn't just run away when he was to be taken away?"
