The whole point of that subplot was that he loved someone and thought the only way for it to be reciprocated and good was to be a girl. It's thematic that even as a woman, nothing really changed about him. The only meaningful change was the label put on him by society and his own thoughts about what is acceptable for him to feel. It's a statement on japanese society looking down on homosexuals and implying only heterosexual love can be valid. Even he thought it was only possible for his feelings to be okay to express if he was a woman. He even fell in love with the only man who ever told him that label didn't matter. Saying he's actually just a tranny is disrespectful to the character and the themes of the story.
