Walker's big fatal flaw from the get-go was that he was personally chose to keep going, when he was supposed to simply leave and report back to base at the start.
They could have given the player the option to do that, but I was never personally a big fan of games where two options are presented and one just results in the game ending, immediately prompting you to reload and take the other choice. If one is the obvious path to progress the actual intended story, than why pretend that we're supposed to be able to do otherwise?
