I just had an epiphany. What if they worshipped something to do with the meteors? The legend of the meteor showers was an ancient thing for them since the sign translates to "THE LEGEND OF METEORS IS BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE IN THE MODERN ERA WITH NEICHEL'S VOICE". This would explain the stars in the cathedral. If you look at the song's lyrics the arrival of the "star children" is seen as a grand event. I would like to draw attention to this part: "Meteor, look where you are—you traveled so far to get here.
You sailed the galaxy wide to crash by our side and twinkle.
You better ask all the other stars to hear your prayers.
Stars that reflect deep inside your cold cosmic eyes.
Songs of your children weave all of the truth of our lives."

The last part of that song where she says "all the truth of our lives" is mixed into the incredibly creepy song that plays shortly before the DLC final battle ("Eternally Stirring Fa-lu-wa-a Song") which I theorize is coming from at least one of the Spaceship New World prototypes seen buried below the island. That line sounds like the inhabitants of the planet revered the Starries possibly in ages past, and the meteor shower may have come to the Forgotten Land a long time before Neichel wrote her song about it. For all we know the planet attracts these meteors for some reason. After all someone would have had to have seen this phenomenon for it to be a legendary thing passed through the ages.

The sign advertising the song is seen alongside the ships far beneath the surface.
