Analysis: The numbers behind Trump's 'boots on the ground' claim may not add up

Putting British boots on the ground to help secure Ukraine's security after a peace deal could be "incredibly dangerous", our military analyst Sean Bell has warned.

He's been breaking down how credible the prospect of having European troops on the ground in Ukraine is.

Bell suggests Donald Trump's comments earlier - see our 13.17 post - might have been "off the cuff".

He explains the number of soldiers that might be involved in such a deployment would be huge:

"If we did some jungle maths here... it's over a thousand-mile border between Russia and Ukraine.

"It is significantly more than that if you include Belarus.

"To get an idea of the scale, even if you had one [soldier] every 60ft, which is not really very credible, you need 100,000 troops.

"If you rotate them every four months, you need 300,000 troops.

"If you look at what the Brits have, they could provide maybe 10% of that, France maybe 10%... no Poland, no American involvement.

"So bluntly, troops on the ground is incredibly dangerous."
