it's my first time. can you teach me how to make a game where all the things in the game stay on a single 2d plane but still have physics so they can like bounce around and stuff?

Like... you know those particle simulations they show you in school with a box and lots of little circles bouncing around inside it? how would you make a top down game like that with a bunch of little spherical hitboxes bouncing around off eachother like molecules of gas?
