>諸善男子 於是中間 我說燃燈佛等 又復言其 入於涅槃 如是皆以 方便分別
Good sirs, in this time I have taught of the Buddha Dipankara and others, and spoken also of their entering into nirvana, but this all is distinguished through skillful means;
>諸善男子 若有眾生 來至我所 我以佛眼 觀其信等 諸根利鈍 隨所應度 處處自說 名字不同 年紀大小
good sirs, wherever a being comes to me, I observe the sharpness or dullness of his faculties such as his faith and so on with my Buddha eyes, and in accordance with whoever I should save, I myself teach everywhere under different names and with ages old and young.
>亦復現言 當入涅槃 又以種種方便 說微妙法 能令眾生發歡喜心
I make also statements about entering nirvana, and with various skillful means teach the sublime dharma, thereby causing beings to experience joy.
>諸善男子 如來見諸眾生 樂於小法 德薄垢重者 為是人說 我少出家 得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提
Good sirs, where the Tathagata sees that beings take pleasure in lesser vehicles, and that their virtue is scant and impurity thick, for these beings' sake He teaches that He left home at a young age, and then attained His perfect enlightenment.
>然我實成佛已來 久遠若斯 但以方便 教化眾生 令入佛道 作如是說
However, since I truly attained my Buddhahood, it has been as long as I have said, and it is only with skillful means, teaching these beings and causing them to enter the Buddha path, that I say such a thing.
