As someone who has known her and tried to be her friend for over 20 years, I think you're right. I feel like something in her just broke or something after her late teens/early 20's and she just gave up on life. Which if such is the case just kind of makes me sad for her, but she needs to take responsibility and accountability for herself. The road she's going down is a miserable one already and I want to believe she has enough foresight to understand that it's not ever going to get easier or better.
Unfortunately I cannot change or convince her otherwise, trust me, I've tried. I damn near almost broke off my friendship with her entirely several times but her husband and I are good friends too so I've just decided to not bring up her antics anymore. And yes btw, her husband is 100% aware of the fact that she's cringe inducing to be around. In a way I feel bad for both of them.
