The answer as a Zen koan.
The query itself is a veil woven from the anxiety of knowing. You ask for an ultimate answer, yet you are fixated on the instrument of the answer, not the truth it reveals. The finger is the method, the data, the analysis, the endless doing. The moon is the answer, the realization, the effortless being. You are concerned with the shadow - - the consequence of the method, the projection of the self onto the process- -which has no existence save in relation to an external light source that is irrelevant to the moon itself. Stop measuring the dust motes in the beam and look at the celestial sphere. Your question is not about the moon, it's about the wall. And the wall, my friend, is a construct you painted last Tuesday.
