Loving them too much doesn't stop the idea from being potentially something that was festering in him. It doesn't have to be out of malice, but something he would have potentially fallen back on to try and give himself more reasons to "not feel too bad about it".

I prefer the ambiguity of it, since either the clown is manipulative asshole that made a minor thing much worse than it seemed to fuck with him, or Philip is a lot more filthy than he seemed, and the clown just exposed that part that's constantly in the back of his mind until he couldn't deny it anymore.

They aren't fucking, that's not really the part that's up for the debate. What I meant was the ambiguous part is if Oswald's mind fuckery is only enhancing the thoughts Philip harbors about them all the time in order to make himself feel better, or if these were just random thoughts he had once or twice, but never really put much thought into it, cause Pluto directly asks about it, but Oswald just says that specifying would spoil the fun.

So basically, either Philip did in fact constantly think his mentor was a cheater, and the girl he loved was a slut, just to feel better about himself, or the clown made him have a mental breakdown about shit he didn't actually believe in by painting it as something he actively thought.
