Tone/aesthetics, story/characters, gameplay - kinda has everything going for it, instead of just one or two things. Obviously it's a taste thing but that's how I feel. I like the dark moody atmosphere and graphics and the more grounded characters and story, while the gameplay is some of the most inventive in the series and wasn't really matched until Conquest, in my opinion. Balance is top notch with a classic low-numbers approach to stats and enemy strength, and you always have a way to solve a problem with what you already have.
It is a bit of a mean game sometimes with a lot of hidden info and arcane shit in it but who cares, just guidefag it like I know you want to. Or accept you're gonna get btfo on a blind purist run. It's a game that gets better on replays but I still keep WoD open to remember things. If that's a dealbreaker, whatevs. I play Mystery Dungeon and Etrian Odyssey games so I'm used to wikifagging during a playthrough.
