In one of the opening scenes of Saving Private Ryan, after the "glorious Allies" invade Omaha Beach, we see Pvt. Caparzo (Vin Diesel) hand a Jewish soldier, Pvt. Mellish (Adam Goldberg), a Hitler Youth knife. The Jew immediately begins crying, as all the soldiers go silent. This scene is designed to make you think about the Holocaust, and feel sorry for this brave American Jew who is fighting to save his oppressed people.

But why would he be crying? Why is everyone silent? It's only June 6th, 1944. The first Jewish Nazi death camp (Majdanek) wouldn't be found for over a month (July 23rd, 1944) by the Jewish Soviets on the other side of Europe. The Americans at this point have little to no evidence that Hitler was gassing Jews.
