Gun enthusiasts don't agree with this but that's what makes them enthusiasts. If you just want a tool for defending yourself you want the smallest, lightest pistol possible that can still kill people, which this image describes (and you have the tools for finding alternate options I don't list).
Your gun will spend somewhere between 99% and 100% of its life sitting in a holster waiting to be used, so being good at comfortably sitting concealed in a holster is very important.
My other heresy is; you don't need a separate "home defense" gun. At home ranges your pistol will be just as effective as it is for concealed carry. If you're a civilian, long guns are for civil unrest (minimum Katrina level) or hunting.
Minimizes guns minimizes expenses and maximizes ammo stacking, training and practice.
I will grant one point for snub revolvers, they tend to be 40% lighter than equivalent sized semi-autos.
