Yeah it’s a law of psychology. I got it from the book Influence about persuasion techniques. Whenever someone says some dumb belief, force them to double down on it and phrase it like other people are watching and they’re “signing their name to it” e.g.
>“wait, just to confirm, you are ACTUALLY trying to suggest that XYZ is true, here on this forum where it will be saved in writing and many others can read it?”

They always back down. It’s very powerful, based in people’s need to be consistent with their stated principles (in this case objectivity, logic etc)
