The only time marriage is presented as somewhat less brutal is when it mimics it but defies the purpose of ascension to Godhood, like with Ranni who is the hero for rejecting the whole pyramid of power and control altogether, and it still happens over the dead body of a God (the Two Fingers that failed to control Ranni).

The whole point of Empyreans is two beings merge into one and thus able to achieve potentially Godhood, which is ecactly what happens in the Rite of Avowal when the Ashen One absorbs the Soul of Anri by killing her in a mausoleum.
