I don't like thinking about this possibility because the narrative made it seem he overcomed the cycle of revenge/hatred thanks to Alan. I mean it would be human for him to finally get revenge for Meixue but still. I can't see any other way to make Phil turn against Gabriel and he did have the possibility to learn about Ange through Alan and his infiltration mission. Why is this novel so sad.
