The problem is that even in a valid self defense situation, which this might be, if you strike and kill an innocent bystander you will likely be charged with murder or manslaughter. Especially in a scenario where you were the only one armed. Its possible the dudes that started the fight could be charged with murder as well, but its all up to the prosecutor; if they dont want to bring charges against you then they wont, if they do then they will. You can already see that the media, and the people in this thread clearly think there is a 'bad guy' in this story...... so how do you think he will fare before a jury?
This is why lethal self defense is tricky, you could just be a dude hitting on a girl at a party, but if you pull the trigger things could go sideways. Now you are some weird dude that is 10yrs out of HS fighting highschoolers and shooting people and a popular HS cheerleader is dead, and you killed her. You can get into all the technicalities and justifications if you want; but thats not how most jurors think; a girl is dead, and YOU are the one that pulled the trigger.
