I literally only play Gekokujo right now, but I can say for (at least in glorious nihon) tactics make a substantial difference. Some combination of the complete lack of shields, rifles providing an extreme long-ranged dimension for combat, cavalry being unbelievably destructive to your backrow, swordsmen usually being heavily armored enough to take advantage of sluggish polearm attacks while eating at least one early stab without caring, etc. You can out-tactics enemies in every single fight and murder your way way above your weight class if all they do is F1->F3 their way to the butcher shop, and when they attempt to use tactical movement, the generally high speed of troop movement rewards you very heavily for careful repositioning and responses to enemy reinforcements. It's genuinely infuriating to watch your own subhuman retard allies just run dick-first into enemy armies, but you don't have to worry about that as long as you're mostly doing your own fighting in the field and leaving them to autoresolve their own fights.
