In my experience with family who went down the "woe is me, I'm so guilty, such a fuck up, this is all my fault and I deserve to never be happy" line of thinking, it's toxic, leads to emasculation which makes others think less of you. It can also become a tactic to deflect actual responsibility for wrongdoing.
Women don't actually respond to dudes who beat themselves up or beg forgiveness, or beg for a crumb of coochie. The best thing you can do is better yourself so that if it doesn't work out you're at least in a better position.
