most people use media nowadays as straight up escapism and are not comfortable with the idea of the media they consume implying or reflecting any darkness because it ruins their 'immersion' and can no longer self insert as the characters when the characters they identify with go through bad shit because "it strikes too close to home", so they create a lot of fix-it fanfics to compensate that, to show how "things should have gone"
