Newfag to Starsector here. I have just been hopping around tradelanes. Built a fleet of a few cargo haulers and some escorts, and currently has ~500k credits. Reputation with some of main factions is slightly negative but not close to hostile, because I didn't realize I should try to avoid trading on the black market with my transponder on.

What should I be aiming to do once I get like 1 million credits?
