Not to defend AL not doing better, but this is unfortunately a problem in gaming/writing in general nowadays. While there's arguably a few specific factors/motivators for mobile gaming as well (i.e. player "engagement" and screentime for a game's old and new units), I blame the "I didn't have time to write a short letter, so I wrote you a long one." mindset / skill-level more and more writers have, valuing word count over readability and/or trust in the audience figuring stuff out without writing an entire paragraph. It's a big reason why a lot of modern stories don't feel like they have clever/impactful twists anymore, because a lot of writers A) either completely fail at proper build ups or B) have the subtlety of a sledgehammer.
