Having a CDL is nice if you want to go for a diesel mechanic gig too. At least for on-road diesel mechanic.
The Waste Management job I was offered… which I still feel bad about not taking because I liked the bros in the office but the company felt like Bepis+ with layers of office politics and woke bullshit and no holidays for frontline workers…
Anyway I went in there like “Listen, I pre-tripped my tractor trailer every day for 11 years at my last job, I know how to run a grease gun and PowerProbe, and I do automotive repairs on the weekends a bit.”
Also one of their old mechanics came to Pepsi and we were talking about how Carlos was a good dude and that probably helped.
So look for that stuff. It was “Assistant Diesl Tech” so those are the guys doing greasing PMs and oil samples and probably light bulbs and shit. It was $21/hr to start with 50+ hours a week, so there was a little bit of money to be made. And a company that big has deals with CAT and Cummins and all those companies to get trained and certified on their stuff and roll that into pay raises and a better resumé to go make $30/hr+. That was my goal if I were going to take that job.
