>why aren't you becoming friends with each other
The truth is that people, and especially men, just have a hard time maintaining friendships when there aren't forces actively forcing the both of you together. How often do your parents hang out with their old friends? Probably very rarely. Once people graduate from school it suddenly becomes necessary to be proactive in order to maintain friendships and human beings are just really bad at being proactive. This is obviously amplified if you're someone who is already depressed and unmotivated like lonely men typically are. This has only gotten worse as technology has made being alone and inside more accessible.
At this point, socialization is basically like exercise. Its not something people do because they like it, its something people do because they know they're supposed to. If food didn't taste good, humans would walk around eternally hungry out of laziness.
