As usual OP is wrong
This is not why Frieren is uninspired soulless trash.
It does have a goal driving the story.
But it's a vague excuse written on a post-it as part of the incredible twist of "What if we followed the immortal elf after the generic fantasy adventure?"
Everything from that point is made-up on the go with no actual plan, and that's why it feels wrong.
Past the smartass joke about typical fantasy tropes, there's no foreshadowing of future intrigue, no growing mystery beyond episodic adventure that add nothing to the grand journey.
The story is slow vib / contemplative simply so it can be made to last without effort. Likely the reason it was so readily made an anime.
The characters are introduced with sudden complex backstory only because they can't disturb the status quo.
Frieren herself is overpowered, aloof, quirky & ""mysterious"" only so any action from her can be retroactively justified as some 4D plans involving memories older than any human characters. Ignoring immediate stuff because "that's no big deal when you live +1000y"
Also you can keep your misogyny for yourself
It is only different from male written isekai-harem in that it don't use a literal male otaku self-insert.

>The animation saved the worthless source material.
I can easily guess why they chose this.
It's slow so there's a lot you can cut, the actions there is can easily be animated to a higher standard without quality loss from the manga
It mainly features comely girls so it will sell.
And since the author is still making it up on the go, they can just wait until there's enough content to make more.
